Pune: The Maharashtra Congress today criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi has wrongly accused the party of possessing an intention bring back inheritance tax."

The Maharashtra Congress in a statement said the PM has said that the party wanted to impose inheritance tax and loot properties of the people which is unbecoming the highest office he holds

"It was actually BJP which has been advocating inheritance tax since it came to power in 2014

First time, the BJP raised the issue of inheritance tax was in 2014 as soon as it came to power. It's Minister Jayant Sinha advocated the introduction of inheritance tax. Sinha said the inheritance tax will provide level playing field as it will deprive dynastic businesses some of the advantages they enjoyed. Again in 2018, Finance Minister Arun Jaitely backed inheritance tax. He based his support to inheritance tax by citing the example of developed countries. He said in developed countries universities and hospitals get large endowments because of presence of inheritance tax,'' Maharashtra Congress spokesperson Gopal Tiwari said in a statement.

The Congress said the Prime Minister picked on statement made by Sam Pitroda who had only spoken that inheritance tax should be discussed and debated. ''The Prime Minister in his speech has tried to attribute the comment to the Congress. He said the Congress had intention to bring back the inheritance tax... This is another jumla of the Prime Minister like he makes in every election. He tries to mislead the people through his jumle baazi,'' Tiwari said in a statement.

The Congress in its manifesto has neither mentioned nor has propogated such a tax. ''It is BJP which has propogated it. The tax was abolished by Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1985 itself...If Congress had abolished it, why it would bring it back ?,'' he asked.
