New Delhi: FED up of Sanjay Nirupam's tirade against the party, the Congress has sent him packing. The party has expelled him for six years.

However, Nirupam resigned on Thursday (April 4, 2024), saying he has resigned first and then party has carried out expulsion. He said he has received the letter of expulsion from the party after he had actually resigned.

The Congress has charged Mr Nirupam with making anti-party statements and committing indiscipline. ''Mr Nirupam has been expelled with immediate effect,'' the Congress said in a statement.

The Congress has also removed Mr Nirupam from its list of star campaigners.

MPCC chief Nana Patole has been more forthright when he said Mr Nirupam has not been showed any show cause notice, he has been directly expelled.

The Congress was fed up repeated statements against the party made by Mr Nirupam. Mr Nirupam was not happy with the party joining hands with Mr Uddhav Thackeray led Shiv Sena. Since 2019, he has been criticising the party heavily. Two days back, he appeared on ABP Majha, a Maratha TV channel, where Congress leaders said, Mr Nirupam made several statements against the party and its leadership.

On his part, Mr Nirupam remained unshaken. ''The Congress party should not waste its stationery material to issue show cause to me...The Congress is going through a deep financial crisis,'' he took a jibe at the grand old party.

Mr Nirupam, as per his close associates, is likely to join the Shiv Sena led by Chief Minsiter Eknath Shinde. He is likely to be fielded from Mumbai seat.

Mr Nirupam was unhappy with the Congress as the party has given the Mumbai seat which he wanted to contest to the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena.
