Pune, May 14, 2024: Yesterday, a tragedy struck in Kolwadi village of Bhor Taluka when a labourer lost his life in a workplace accident while the Gram Panchayat was conducting well maintenance. The incident occurred yesterday around 1:30 p.m. when the wire rope of the crane snapped, causing the bucket to plummet into the well.

Ankush Prabhakar Gedam, a 23-year-old resident of Gadchiroli, was in the bucket at the time and tragically succumbed to his injuries on the spot when the iron hook of the wire rope struck him. Another worker, Vijendra Ramanand Bhardwaj, aged 49 and hailing from Uttar Pradesh, sustained serious injuries in the accident.

The crane mishap occurred during routine well maintenance work after the lunch break. Workers were being lowered into the well using the crane when the unforeseen incident took place, causing the bucket to fall approximately 50 feet down the well.

Following the accident, prompt action was taken by village police Ajit Shinde, Pramod Shinde, and other workers, who swiftly called for an ambulance to transport the injured to Nasrapur hospital. Additionally, workers trapped in the well were safely rescued with the assistance of another crane and transported on cots.

The incident has been reported to the authorities, and it was said that legal action would be taken against those responsible for the accident. Concerns have been raised regarding the safety protocols employed by contractors conducting well maintenance work. It has been noted that many contractors are neglecting safety measures, putting workers' lives at risk.
